In the u.K., religion was not something that anyone took seriously, apart from people who were dismissed as a bit freaky. And i think n back on it, one has to be sympathetic for some of the reasons for this. In the usa, it was very, very different, very, verydifferent. So if one's trying to think why one should be sympathetic about more aggressive forms of atheism, it's really important to understand what the context was like in the us.
