Is There a Mental Illness?

Mental illness is quite exceptional, it's quite different. We just decided that we would put a tremendous amount of public funds into building jails and prisons. At the same time, we gutted our public mental health system. And so the bunt idea really comes out of this need to try to understand both the problems and the solutions in a much broader context. The medical model has worked so well for infectious eases and for lots of areas of medicine. I think it's working very well for cancer right now. But it hasn't worked for people with serious mental illness. It's led to a focus on symptom reduction, but not to afocus on recovery.
