Both pilots were from Florida, so they had limited experience taking off and landing in frozen conditions. First officer was Roger Pettit, who was 31 years old with 3,353 flight hours. He had been a fighter pilot in the US Air Force. Pilot Larry Wheaton has 8,300 total flight hours; 2,322 of them being commercial jet experience.
