The Benefits of Column Awareness in Data Transformation
Column awareness can be applied to other outside processes, such as reverse ETL or visualization tools. I just don't have a use case in my mind, but definitely I see that it can only benefit the systems. Yeah, it's interesting too, because some of the metadata platforms are using their contextual awareness to feed back into the transformation process.

Summary
Architectural decisions are all based on certain constraints and a desire to optimize for different outcomes. In data systems one of the core architectural exercises is data modeling, which can have significant impacts on what is and is not possible for downstream use cases. By incorporating column-level lineage in the data modeling process it encourages a more robust and well-informed design.
