The Importance of Individualism

The United States 1790 was the most diverse nation on earth. The idea of individual freedom was associated ever more closely with whiteness and with white men in particular. And so you see constant contrast being drawn, especially to Western Europe as a place where individuals could enjoy an expansive personal liberty.
