I'm a big fan of mechanistic interpretability work on its own merits, even if it's not a great contributor to safety. We've made some strides, but like we are not very good on understanding GPT-2 using GPT-4. The whole goal is for something to understand something smarter than itself. If I can interpret something that's more complex than me, that's amazing news. That's the part that we have to hit. Right now, we haven't hit a vastly easier target, right? And we're not anywhere that close to hitting it, but we can try.
