The Confounding Factors of Meritocracy
When we think of meritocracy, it's very kind of idealized where again, it's like this pure system that people rise through just based on their own efforts. And I remember thinking I had a conversation with one of my graduate professors like way back when, and then I said to him, you know, I said IQ tests are like kind of weird, right? Because I was like, they sort of hide a lot if you think about it. If everybody has anxiety while they're taking these IQ tests, then the next kid is gonna have anxiety too. It's not really a confounding variable because at the end of the day, again, egalitarianism sort of reigns as well
