Irregularity and the Great Famine
The great hunger did transform irish politics in a way that made a war of independence possible. The landlords had, by a large, been extremely reliant on and loyal to the british govern ment. But new emerging farmers who were buying their farms were not. It's no exageration to say that ireland's independence was, to one degree or another, out workings of tensions and resentments built up during the horrors of the famine.
