In 1862, the Chirakawa decided they wanted to try and raid the military. They were outgunned but could retreat into the desert where they would be undetected. The camp grant massacre in 1871 was a big turning point because it killed all but eight of the 144 people who had been camping at an army encampment near Tucson. It also had a huge effect on not just the Arava, Aipa, Apache, but also the Chiracawa as well.
