The Importance of Heavy Distillates in Oil Refining
The amount of light, sweet crude in the US has been declining. It's being replaced by less desirable crude that are heavier and have more sulfur in them. The U.S. refining system migrated over from being able to process light sweet crude to be able to process heavy sour crude. And so the thing is that you were running the US refining system in a system that was being run suboptimally for that time period.
