The Sundial and the Atomic Clock

Until the 19th century, sundials were still used to reset mechanical clocks. The reason they could put the sundial behind is that as science advanced, we came up with more advanced ways of measuring the rotation of the earth. As we enter the 1900s, we are beginning to approach the invention of the atomic clock. Do you know what makes the atomic clock so important?
