Tel Aviv, the City of the Dead

In Jerusalem people always walked like mourners at a funeral, or laid cameras to a concert. We had waited for two thousand years to gain a foothold in Jerusalem, and we were now unwilling to give it up. But Tel Aviv? Wow. The whole city was one big grasshopper that people leapt by. People in Jerusalem talked about Tel Aviv with envy and pride, with admiration but almost, eventually, as though the city was some kind of secret project of the Jewish people they didn't want to talk about too much.
