Waylon Jennings, the other member of Buddy Holly's band, was persuaded to give up his seat on the plane due to the sorry site of JP. Tommy Alsup also agreed to a coin toss backstage after their gig in Clear Lake, and Richie Valens won. And he was supposedly heard to say, wow, that's the first time I've ever won anything in my life. He happily went to the airport to the plane ride that would lead him to his death.
