The History of Villas in Ancient Rome
In Latin, willa, the singular of willai, meant country house. Urban villas were basically glorified resorts while rustic villas were agricultural estates resembling modern day plantations. The relationship between villa farm workers and the villa landowners not only gave us the etymological foundation of the word villain, but also the socioeconomic foundation of medieval feudalism.
