A Brief History of the Penitenti
Penitenti began to club together involuntary associations, religious associations of the devout laity. Lay people founded a rural confraternity that met annually on the feast of their patron, saint james. The group provided support for poorer members should they become sick or die. This association is virtually iden a in activities and organization to the later documented communities of lay people.
