Three and a half million people in afghanistan need help, says Katherine stubberfield of the u.N h c r. The economy is collapsing with remittances from abroad suspended; central bank assets frozen. Prices are rising for basic goods: warnings of hyper inflation and possibly extreme hunger to come. How did this fighting force stay financed and effective over so many years? I asked jonathan goodhand about this. He is a professor in conflict and development studies at london's school for oriental and asian studies.
