The History of James Monroe
During the war of 1812, British soldiers led by major general Robert Ross stormed Washington. The original White House was burnt down on August 24, 1814. James Madison removed his Secretary of War and replaced him with James Monroe. On March 4, 1817, James Monroe opened the new White House that he ordered the construction of after most of it was burnt down.
