A cauldron is simply a large pot used to boil liquid over a fire. In function, it's really no different from any pot you have in your kitchen. It's just generally considered a bigger pot. Long before the advent of metal pots, e had bowls. And this is something that can be made water it via the use of animal hides. But where's the heat going to come from? Good question, yeh.
