What Kind of People Become Freemasons?
Masons tended to be strivers, sorof men of middling status, but of great ambition and who were seeking out pathways for mobility. The rolls of freemasonry in rhode island teem with upwardly mobile merchants, tradesmen, professionals, ambitious strivers with an eye on the horizon. So i wrotete those who joined the fraternity tended to be men who had something to gain and not too much to lose. Totally absent are the great merchant princes that held much of rhode island,. godfrey malbone, david cheesboroug john bannister, abraham redwood, aaron lopez, sam el and william vernon.
