How Do We Estimate Variance?
The model is based on what characteristics of individuals impact how stable they are, if you want to use the term stable. At no point do we ever actually estimate an individual's variance on an outcome,. Positive affect, negative affect, whatever. Instea, it's implied within the model. The term i like sometimesis its written into the likelihood. That is, we're writing out the model in a way that these variances become a perimeter in the models. If you don't do these kinds of models, you would never be able to bring empirical data to bear with meaningful results.
