The Evolution of the Body
If you lose your hand in a car accident, the brain's motor cortex begins to shift and change itself. Brain areas that control neighboring arm muscles like biceps and triceps slowly take over the cortical territory that formerly operated your hand. So what this tells us is that the motor areas of the brain optimize themselves to drive available machinery. And this principle opens the door to rearranging body plans.
