The Decline of the City States

It was Napoleon, who was the deadly blow for most of the German cities and and also Italian cities. Venice was also captured by Napoleon in 1797, came to an end, never came back. And that was just if you can mobilize large armies with modern weapons, have standing army,. then the advantage of the cities that couldn't easily defend themselves was lost. Their meaning was also lost because they were a powerful player  and people would say, maybe I'd rather become part of this powerful emperor than this small city.
