Henry II and Thomas Beckett
Henry tried to work Beckett's supporters. He compiled a set of articles defining the custom of the land in matters of church state relations. In 1164 he invited Thomas and his bishops along to a shindig at Clarendon near Solsbury, south of England. It was one party invitation that the bishops didn't enjoy getting,. But nonetheless they all turned up, no doubt looking forward to a full and frank exchange of pews.
