There is this popular belief that extrinsic rewards would reduce intrinsic motivation, although researches are kind of not very clear on that. Many experiments, particularly field experiments, which were run by economists, actually found that in the longer run, after six months, people essentially either do little better than what they were doing prior to incentives.
