People will vote for policies that you can prove using deductive reasoning alone, do not work. It becomes less costly to just sit on your ass and do nothing; it becomes more costly to do stuff. And as people vote for these policies, you can see in all democracies that none of them want to reduce the size of government in any significant way. So I think in the long run, those effects amplify over time, which means that the state gains more and more control over people.
