The Origin Story of Referees

If referees have an origin story, this is it. And has got two ideas buried inside. The first idea the job of the referee is so hard to do that doing it really well is a sign of divine inspiration. We just assume that some totally innocent third party will want to help us to resolve even our most petty disputes. Why should someone with no real interest in our conflicts be better at refering them than we are?
