The same warming that was causing the ice to recede was also melting the glaciers on the island. As that glacial water ran down in these growing rivers out into the fiords, it would slam into the cold, dark currents of the arctic ocean. And at that interface was just like, for a plankton at least, swimming into a brick wall. Some naturalists report seeing them diving deeper than ever before as their prey has moved to waters. To be clear, this isn't evolution by definition. Evolution requires genetic changes in an animal. But adapting your behavior as the environment changes around you can make a big difference to survival.
