The Role of Macrophages in Atherosclerosis

The World Health Organization says atherosclerosis is the cause of 27% of all deaths. It's not really cholesterol, it's macrophages that are incapable of dealing with this problem as you grow older. The smooth muscle gets involved and basically you get into the plaque situation. When you're young, macrophage work just fine. Your blood vessels are not covered in plaque. But when you're old, they are. And that is entirely down to them being unable to do their jobs anymore.
