The Effect of Sunk Cost on Social Well-Being
Some studies show that members of strict religions also have very high rates of happiness. And part of it is, you know, you can gain a certain level of social standing and social clout in a small strict community. So I don't know if it's so much sunk cost as it is. This powerful sense of belonging.
