Charles Taylor stepped down as president of Liberia on August 11, 2003. He would be arrested in 2006 and later convicted of crimes against humanity by a special court in the Hague. The atmosphere in Monrovia was hard to describe; people feel relieved that Taylor had left so that it was to come to an end. Ellen Johnson-Sally was elected, becoming the first female president in Africa. She admitted supporting his war against Samuel Do.
