The 200-Year History of Irish Economic Relations With the United Kingdom
The Act of Union in 1801 was a direct response to the 1798 rebellion. It began the slow strangulation of the independent Irish economy. Nothing was built in Victorian Dublin apart from Rannellat and Rathgar. Why? Because the economy was begun to be strangled by London. The strategy was to keep the Irish subjugated because you know what? When they are independent as they were in the 18th century, not only do the peasant Irish feel like revolting, but even worse, the mercantile class who want to get rid of people as much as possible. And that of course was part of the strategy.
