Expulsion of the Asians in East Africa
In Kenya, leader Jomo Kenyatta refused to sign any independence agreement unless Britain agreed to a staggered quota of reduction in resident Asians. Similarly, Indians are being flushed out in Tanzania. Expelling the Asians was actually a policy of Milton Abotis but he was simply deposed before he got round to it. Similar attitudes pervade other parts of East Africa. The expulsion of the Asians fitted in with wider nationalist attempts to embed African rule in both the politics and the economics of the newly independent countries.
