The Cost of Self-Protective Behavior During COVID
In 2013, Frederick Chen published the paper, behavioral responses to epidemics in an online experiment using virtual diseases to study human behavior. People's willingness to engage in safe behavior waxes and wanes over time depending on the severity of the epidemic. When prevalence is high, people are more likely to adopt self-protective measures time goes by. when prevalence is low, individuals are less willing to engage in self-behavior over time. In a wide interview, Chen says, one thing that very starkly stood out is that the disease in my game didn't have to be a problem.
