Aristotle, Hippocrates and Galen explained the male and female physiology. Aristotle's medical view tended to encourage the most misogynistic interpretations. The parts that were outside a male were inside a female. Female seed was potentially lethal if it built up in marriage. If there was no sex in marriage then action had to be taken.
