Historians have caricatured moctezuma as a weak and indecisive king, but i don't think that's entirely fair. He sent out messengers to all the cities of mexico and beyond asking if they knew anything about these strangers who had appeared so suddenly on their shores. Montrezuma also ordered spies to place themselves in every town and village between tenoste tlan and the coast,. Also sent his disgraced magicians to try and redeem themselves by putting curses and spells on the foreigners.
