Masha Gessen is a staff writer at The New Yorker, the author of many books on Russia and the nature of autocracy. Masha who identifies as trans is also a leading figure in covering LGBT rights. I just spoke with a Democratic state senator in Nebraska and she's fighting to block a bill that would withhold gender affirming care from trans kids. All of these bills are about signaling and what they're signaling is the essence of past-oriented politics.
