The Relationship Between Liberalism and Other Sets of Views
Do you think that this tension is one of the reasons for the sort of perceived intellectual failure of the liberal project going into the 20th century but also its enduring appeal? I'm not going to have anything to say about the crisis of the 20th Century. But let me say two different things about the relationship between liberalism and other sets of views. My rationalist liberals are not Jackabans. They are not people who are ruthlessly devoted to the destruction of all non-state order for the fun of it. And my pluralist liberals aren't anarchists or perhaps more saliencely, conservatives devoted to the unalterable integrity of all of the sub-state groups.
