What Is Language For?

I kind of think of theories of language on a scale of Chomsky to Thomas cello, where on the Chomsky side, basically you have, okay, I'm going to explain language by just saying how syntax works. We've got structure. That's Chomsky. And then you've got Michael Thomas cello who's basically like, well, if you want to understand language, like go check out what people are doing with it and what problem it's solving. It was only really in my reading over the last 20 or so years and people really even cared what language was for. But as someone looking outside of that field, maybe that's surprising that that's such a even that kind of perspective
