How Do Things Work?

We are often asking, how do things work? What's going on with these particles? But underlying that, there is a question tanding on the wings, waiting for an answer. And that question really is, why this universe? Why is the universe this one and not some other one? Could it have been a different universe? Or is this the only possible way for a universe to exist?
