The Sanhedrin was a religious council of individuals that are distinguished. They were the aristocracy of Jerusalem and included the high priest who according to tradition could break ties. A unanimous verdict of guilt pronounced on the same day as the trial in their own law constituted an automatic acquittal, says Andrew Skinner.
