China started cracking down on qigong in the early to mid 90s. They can't really find a lot of scientific backing for well-being claims. Some masters who don't do that try to be like, actually I can prove that it's real. One dude tried to blow up another guy's gallbladder with his mind and then realized two hours into it he could only do it to himself.
