A lot of this material was coming from the islamic world, which had preserved a much greater a share of ancient knowledge. The process of debate that scholars adopted to try to work out these contradictions and to try to settle on a consensous understanding of the ancient wisdom came to be called a scholasticism. It's essentially a a philosophy of disputation, a philosophy of examining disagreements and searching for reconciliation among them.
