How to Talk to Transgender Users in Your Project
You have to actively go out into the transgender community and talk to people. I don't think copying Facebook's interface would be a good idea either. If you can get a developer on your side, maybe you do just write in there or a database. Just put male, female, other. And see where the discussion going.
