When the British resumed control of Malaya in 1945, it was not popular. The Chinese Malays felt that they were under the thumb of the British. In retaliation against the killings of left-wing activists, Chinese Malay Communists murdered three British plantation owners. 12 years of brutal conflict ensued and half a million rural Malayans had to be forced into internment camps.
