Magellan's Journey to the Atlantic

In August 1519, Magellan disembarked with a crew of 280 men among the five ships of his fleet. He sailed into the Atlantic with a multi-ethnic crew that spoke various languages. Due to the divisions between the crew members, Mutiny broke out shortly after the voyage began. The masters of three ships attempted to kill him before the fleet even reached South America. A fourth vessel would eventually abandon the fleet and return to Europe. To compound Magellan's problems, King Manuel of Portugal ordered his captured imprisonment before his departure.
