When I was a kid, I remember in grade seven that we all had to file into the career counselor's office and say what we were interested in for a career. And so I said I wanted to be a lichenologist. But I sometimes look back and think, well, it wasn't the lichen symbiosis, but it was microbiotic. So my PhD thesis was on whether or not having this ectomycorrhizal association where the sheath, there's a layer of fungus around the outside of each of the little feeder roots is somehow protecting these birch from copper and nickel.
