Before DSM-3 came in, scientists were figuring it out and working with people to address the same-sex attraction. What really changed things was right around the 1970 American Psychiatric Association meeting in San Francisco. The gay liberation front back then saw that the diagnosis of homosexuality as a major political obstacle.
