In iceland, women have the largest participation in the work force of the o e c d countries. Part of that reason is because of subsidized child care and parental leave scheme. The parental leave policy is paid by the state; it's not paid by the employers. And then once they go into child care, that's heavily subsidized as well. So there's a lot more encouragement for women to return to the work force in iceland.
'Sprakkar' is an ancient Icelandic word meaning extraordinary or outstanding women. It forms the basis of the new book by Eliza Reid, author and co-founder of the Iceland Writers Retreat, who is also the nation's First Lady.
