There's no wonder that we spend so much time worrying about lawsuits. An apology is not necessarily an admission of fault. Refusing to apologize can precipitate litigation to an even greater extent. The lack of an apology can dilute the doctor patient relationship, hinder patient safety and increase litigation. But if you apologize for something bad happening, that is something crazy within the protective side of law. I'm a lawyer but i've spent enough time with lawyers over this process to stand that apologies are beneficial to the physician as long as you're saying it in good faith.
