Are You a Transcendentalist?
For rousseau, and then leading into the romantics and the american transcendentalists, nature is actually speaking to us. Nature is now apo place where we can experience authenticity, rather than simply a place of self mortification. So i think there's a real contrast between the greeks, for whom you can be solitary, but even within the pollace, and then for the christians, where you flee into the desert as a place of purgation.
